Athens is the largest center in northeastern Georgia, and sits in the foothills of Georgia's mountains. The University of Georgia was established in 1801 near a small settlement that, in 1806, became the city of Athens, named after the Greek center of higher learning. Athens is still very much a university town with many of the city's attractions related to the school. In addition to the University, visitors to Athens should see the Georgia Museum of Art, Lyndon House Arts Center, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the historic homes and neighborhoods of the city.
